Sharon Redd - Wonderful Woman No. 76

Sharon Redd - 1945-1992
American Singer, Songwriter and Actress

Added to the album by Lee, a wonderful man

First female singer to pass away through Aids related illnesses and transcended everything from disco (Can you Handle It) to Beat The Street. Lived fast, died young, amazing voice. Always brings a tear to my eye when I hear Beat the Street... Such a sad life story but what am amazing voice.

If you have ever seen me behind a set of decks, listened to me on the radio or even looked through the YouTube clips I post on Facebook, you will know that the word disco is imprinted on my heart. Sharon Redd is yet another singer in the album who has made records we have loved, music that has been a huge part of people's lives and that, for me personally, is what makes her truly wonderful.

Born into a musical family, Sharon began recording in her early twenties. She released four singles before she got her big break, an acting role in the cult musical Hair. She went on to do more stage work and appeared in the American television show Rhoda and made an appearances in a couple of music based films.

After becoming one of Bette Midler's Harlettes, a trope of flamboyant dancers and backing singers that performed with the legendary star's stage shows, during the mid 1970s, Sharon went on to have a successful recording career of her own. She recorded four studio albums during the 1980s and had some chart success with the numerous singles she released, including Beat the Street, Can You Handle It and, my particular favourite, I Specialise in Love.

In 1992 Sharon developed pneumonia as a consequence of contracting the AIDS virus, this resulting in her death aged just forty-six.

In the album for her legacy of extremely wonderful music, for being a disco legend and for her strength.

When I go on stage, I give it everything I have.
Sharon Redd
